What had she and Archie done? They had not taken heed and so they had wandered from God’s commandments.

It was a black occasion, yet it did not spoil the visit to Cefnmawr. Uncle Simon was so particularly kind that Archie and Matty almost believed he knew nothing of their misdoing. But one day at dinner he helped them both to over-generous platefuls of green peas, fresh from Aunt Phoebe’s garden.

‘I have always understood,’ he remarked, twinkling a little, ‘that ducks and peas agree very well together. And ducks and peas are better than duckings; eh, Matty and Archie?’

Matty’s poplin frock never quite recovered from the pond, though dear Ann Jane did all she could with her washing and ironing and hanging-out on a lavender bush. But when the time came to go home, Aunt Phoebe gave Matty a length of beautiful dark brown material, woven from the wool of her own black sheep. Miss Preece made it up into a new frock for the autumn.
